Auditioning!... with Ariel Chan

Next up in our auditioning series we have Ariel Chan who joined YAF two years ago. She’s been in Arts in the Park, Triple Threat, Matilda, JUMP CUT and The Peninsula’s Bellhop to name but a few.  

下一位我們請來陳衍汶。陳衍汶自前年開始參與YAF的舞蹈演出，包括「渣打藝趣嘉年華」、「藝能者」、「瑪嬌達」劇場表演、「跳線」獨立電影節及「半島酒店85週年—酒店行李員」等。

Ariel, how did you get involved with YAF?
I learned abut YAF when I came across Arts in the Park two years ago. I was so fascinated by the event and the performers, I told myself ,”I want to be one of them!!” I am extremely glad to have now found a new community, where arts is celebrated and appreciated, and where performers and art lovers gather around, share experiences and make something wonderful.

你從甚麼渠道認識YAF？
兩年前，當我路經「渣打藝趣嘉年華」，我被台上的表演者迷住了，因此我希望成為他們的一份子。最後發得知YAF這個團體。在這裏，藝術是受人欣賞的。表演者與觀眾一同分享自己的經驗和興趣，更創作出獨一無二的作品。

What’s it like auditioning for a YAF show?
Auditioning for YAF is… fun!! The auditioning process is conducted very professionally. Yet it tends to be relaxed to ensure you perform your best. The audition does not simply seek for raw talent in singing, dancing or any particular strength. But also a chance to show your personality and your passion for that specific project/show. So sometimes it involves improvisations, introductions and activities.

參與YAF的遴選面試是怎樣的？
YAF的面試是… 好玩的！整個過程都非常專業，但同時亦都比較輕鬆，讓你可以好好表現自己。其實面試不只是尋找一些歌藝非凡的人，還要尋找一些個性突出且熱衷於表演的人。因此，面試過程中會有一些即興的練習、自我介紹和活動去表現自己。

What do you do to prepare for an audition?
I make sure I’m in my best condition, which means my voice sings well and none of my body parts are sprained or broken haha

你在面試前要準備甚麼？
我會讓自己保持最佳狀態，即是聲線能好好演繹整首歌曲及身體並無任何損傷以完成舞蹈。

Top tips?
Keep calm and be positive about it. Sometimes when I audition, I think the worse, with thoughts like, “I won’t make it!!” or “these people are so good!! I’m never getting in!!”. This tends to make you less energetic when you are auditioning because you’re all sad and sulking. And for YAF’s shows, it’s always about energy. Keep reminding yourself that as long as you do your best, there’s a chance, because you’d never know what the result might be! 有何面試貼士？ 面試最重要的是保持冷靜及樂觀面對。猶記得早前我去面試，我總是作最壞打算，想着：「我不會成功！」或「別人那麼厲害，我怎會有機會？」這樣只會令你變得垂頭喪氣，大大影響你的面試表現！YAF的面試，最重要的是你那一份熱情和活力。經常提醒自己，只要做到最好，就會有機會，還沒有到最後，你也不會知道結果是甚麼。

What is your favourite thing about being in a show?
The best (and my favourite) thing about being in a YAF shows is that you get to experience how professional drama productions are. The tailor made costumes are absolutely stunning, the director and crew of the show are well, PROFESSIONAL! Also the variety of people you work with! Full of surprises!

你為什麼喜歡參與表演？
參與YAF的表演讓我體驗專業的戲劇製作。華麗的服裝、專業的導演和幕後人員，還有你身邊的演員，悖也只能用「專業」來形容！他們永遠給你無限的驚喜！

What are YAF rehearsals like?
YAF’s rehearsals are efficient and interesting in all ways. The atmosphere tends to be balanced between serious and relaxed.Cooperation is something you cannot miss either, because you need to work with other people in the production, as well as with the director. Oh! Nearly missed this one out, there are lots and lots of funny moments. Be prepared for a sore stomach!!

能簡述一下YAF的綵排情況嗎？
YAF的綵排效率高，又十分有趣，在嚴肅和輕鬆中找到平衡點。合作的意思是一個都不能少，這正正在綵排中體現得到，因為你必須與其他表演者或是導演合作，才能順利完成綵排。當然，還有非常非常多的搞笑場面呢！
